Tyntesfield

About

An ornate Victorian Gothic Revival house with extensive garden and parkland, just a stone's throw from Bristol, Tyntesfield was not intended to be an extravagant statement of wealth, power or politics. Its purpose was simple: to serve as a family home.

Originally a smaller Georgian house, Tyntesfield was transformed into a Gothic Revival masterpiece. Its bespoke architecture reflects the devout Anglo-Catholic beliefs of the Gibbs family. Here they invested their wealth derived from controlling the import of Peruvian ‘guano’ fertiliser.

The garden and estate balance faded beauty and function with an abundance of nature. Flower-filled terraces, an empty lake, extensive woodland, champion trees and a productive kitchen garden give many opportunities for exploration. And with each season you can experience a new side to Tyntesfield.

Find out more and book your visit on the Tyntesfield website.

Kids activities

The natural play trail in the woods is open, and features well spaced out play features. Please bring your own hand sanitiser and keep a safe distance from others.

Things to see and do
There are suggested one way walking routes to keep everyone safe and to help you make the most of your visit. Autumn colour walks are a fantastic way to explore the estate, or a brisk winter walk will blow away the cobwebs.
The house opens from Monday 7 September, with limited numbers to ensure social distancing. Entry is on a first come, first served basis and included with your admission. Please leave large bags at home.
Picnics are welcome across the estate – please take your rubbish home with you.

Eating and Shopping

The Cow Barn and Pavilion Cafe are open.

The Cow Barn (10am – 4:30pm) in the Home Farm visitor centre offers year-round homemade dishes using estate-grown ingredients. Takeaway (please bring a face covering) or eat in on a first come, first served basis.

Further into the estate, the Pavilion Café is dog friendly, and serves light bites, coffee and cake. It is open everyday, 10:30-16:30, please bring a face covering.

The extensive Cow Barn shop sells local artisan products, classic National Trust lines and seasonal favourites. There’s also a garden and plant shop and second hand bookshop.

Dogs

Dogs on leads are welcome in all areas of the estate except the Cow Barn visitor centre, rose garden, kitchen garden and house.
